Founded in Horgen near Zurich in 1880 and expanded to include the Glarus factory in 1902, ag Möbelfabrik horgenglarus is the oldest chair and table manufacturer in Switzerland and has been a world leader in furniture manufacturing in terms of design and quality for over 135 years. For example, Le Corbusier presented the chairs manufactured by horgenglarus for his "Pavillon de l'Esprit Nouveau" at the "Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs" in Paris as representative examples of a contemporary and forward-looking view of home decor.
This innovative basic orientation has not changed to this day: horgenglarus continues to focus on the characteristic combination of form and function. This is recognized: classic, perfect form, timelessness and high quality workmanship are the criteria according to which horgenglarus was awarded the title “World Class – Made in Switzerland”. The reduced design of the chairs and tables from horgenglarus is part of the craftsmanship. The knowledge and skills of the craftsmen are the most important capital. The unique selling point lies in the 100-year-old ability to bend even heavy and large woods, such as the backs, frames and legs of our chairs. The heart of horgenglarus is wood bending. Here the wooden parts are steamed until they can be easily shaped in the bending machine. Since the annual rings are not cut, the stability of the wood is maintained. This, together with the "finest, professional workmanship", as it was said in an advertisement in 1917, is the secret of the chairs' unrivaled solidity. After drying, the backrests and seats of the chairs are assembled and the legs are milled to the appropriate height. All chairs and tables are sanded by hand until the wood is velvety soft. It is then painted and, if desired, oiled or soaped. We always combine traditional craftsmanship with the most modern, partly CNC-controlled technology. This craftsmanship allows sophisticated projects from architects, but also special requests, and old chairs to be restored. For decades, sustainable work has been based on three pillars: visual longevity, durability through unsurpassed manufacturing quality and regional materials with short transport routes.
