horgenglarus: The Oldest Chair and Table Manufactory in Switzerland

Character-strong furniture for people who seek the authentic.

When it comes to durability and puristic design, there is no way around horgenglarus. Since 1880, the manufactory in Glarus has been crafting furniture that is far more than mere utility items: they are icons of Swiss design history. As a partner for high-quality interior design, we particularly value the uncompromising quality that makes horgenglarus the first choice for public buildings and sophisticated private spaces.

Craftsmanship Tradition Since 1880

The reduced design of horgenglarus chairs and tables is part of their craftsmanship. The knowledge and skill of the craftspeople are the most important assets. The unique selling point lies in 100 years of expertise in bending even heavy and large pieces of wood, such as the backs, frames, and legs of our chairs. The heart of horgenglarus is the wood-bending shop. Here, the wooden parts are steamed until they can be formed with ease in the bending machine. Since the annual rings are not cut through in this process, the stability of the wood is preserved. Combined with the "finest, professional execution," as stated in an advertisement as early as 1917, this is the secret of the chairs' unmatched solidity. After drying, the backrests and seats are mounted, and the legs are milled to the appropriate height. All chairs and tables are sanded by hand until the wood is velvety soft. Then they are lacquered, or oiled or soaped upon request. We always combine traditional craftsmanship with state-of-the-art, partly CNC-controlled technology. Through this craftsmanship, demanding projects by architects can be realized, special requests met, and old chairs restored. For decades, our sustainable work has been based on three pillars: visual longevity, durability through unmatched manufacturing quality, and regional materials with short transport routes. Chairs and tables for a small eternity. Sealed with our guarantee "Handcrafted in Switzerland since 1880."

What Makes horgenglarus Furniture Unique

Bentwood Perfection

Bending solid wood under steam is an art that only a few still master. horgenglarus uses this process to create extremely resilient and simultaneously elegant forms that do not require glue joints at critical points.

Timelessness Instead of Trends

A horgenglarus chair does not follow trends. The design is so reduced and functional that it still looks modern even after 50 years. This makes the furniture a sustainable investment for generations.

Sustainability Through Longevity

At horgenglarus, sustainability means that a piece of furniture does not need to be replaced. The use of certified woods from the region and a construction that allows for repairs underscore the ecological commitment of the manufactory.

Frequently Asked Questions about horgenglarus

Why are horgenglarus chairs so stable?

The stability results from the combination of solid woods and the bentwood technique. Instead of assembling wooden parts, they are bent, which preserves the natural grain of the wood.

Which wood species are used?

Horgenglarus works primarily with beech, oak, ash, cherry, and walnut. All woods come from sustainably managed forests, mostly directly from Switzerland or neighboring Europe.

Can I have old horgenglarus chairs restored?

Yes, the manufactory offers a repair service. Since the designs often remain unchanged for decades, spare parts can often be manufactured true to the original.

Are there individual surface treatments available?

As a specialist retailer, we offer you various options: from natural oiled to lacquered, or special stain colors perfectly matched to your existing interior.
